Do I need to own a piano?
Not immediately. In order to make progress it is necessary to at least own an electric keyboard that the student can practice on. There are many keyboards available, and their quality varies widely. Your instructor can help you choose a keyboard. As a student becomes more advanced a real acoustic piano becomes necessary.
Can an adult learn to play the piano?
Yes! Learning a musical instrument can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience for adults. We have many adult students at the Piano Key who have enjoyed learning how to play the piano. Adults tend to be interested in piano lessons for many reasons. You may have always wanted to learn but never had the opportunity as a child, you may have taken lessons before but want to start playing again, or you may simply have a piano in your house and want to learn how to play it. Whatever the reason we can help you! We plan our lessons around your skill level, so whether you have had years of instruction in the past or have never read a sheet of music, you can learn at your own pace.
How much should I practice?
This varies based on age and skill level. Your instructor is best qualified to help you design a practice schedule that will ensure the most progress.
Are there opportunities to perform as a student at The Piano Key?
Yes. We have at least 2 major recitals each year, plus various other events throughout the year as well. We invited students of all ages and abilities to participate in our recitals.
Does learning to play a musical instrument augment other skills in life?
Numerous studies have demonstrated that learning to play a musical instrument can help in other academic areas. Students in music lessons learn that they need to meet specific goals, discipline themselves to practice regularly, perform well in public recitals, and break bigger tasks (such as learning a 5 page piece of music) into manageable parts. All of these skills transfer to other areas of life.
